$18 billion in Lost and Unclaimed Super – How Much is Yours?

As at 30 June 2017, there are over 6.3 million lost and unclaimed super accounts with a total value of almost $18 billion.

How much of this is yours??

The typical reason for lost and unclaimed super is members changing address and forgetting to advise their superannuation fund.

Superfunds tell the Australian Tax Office (ATO) about these accounts.

Now the ATO can match lost and unclaimed super accounts via the tax file number your superfund has.  But they don’t proactively tell you about these lost and unclaimed super.

Why?  Because if you never claim these, the money goes to the government and it becomes a defacto tax on your savings.

So, you need to do the leg work.  Thankfully technology has made this easier and you can find any of your lost or unclaimed super accounts on the myGov website.

Simply go to https://my.gov.au/ and sign up.  Note you will need you tax file number and some other details.  Best to have a copy of a recent tax assessment notice handy when you do this.  And once there, check your super.
