I keep hearing Bill Shorten implying that there is a huge number of people who have used negative gearing amass a huge property empire.  So I thought I would do a property investor fact check on these claims. 

According to data made publicly available by the Australian Taxation Office, just 49,178 Australian taxpayers have 4 or more negatively geared Australian investment properties.  That is less than 0.4% of all taxpayers.  A further 37,143 (0.27% of all taxpayers) own 4 or more Australian investment properties running at a profit.

To me, Bill Shorten’s claims fail the fact check.
