Now you are probably thinking, given how many Olympic athletes are poor and rely on their friends and family to pay for their sport, how can they help me earn more money?
Let me explain.
To even make the Olympic team, they have to be the best they possibly can be.
Can you imagine any athlete saying, I just need to turn up and I will make the team. I do not need to be the best I possibly can. Someone like Usain Bolt may be the exception here!
So just about every athlete trying to get to the Olympics needs to perform at their peak just to make the team.
And then once they are at the Olympics, how many athletes perform personal bests?
So to make the Olympic team, and then succeed at the Olympics, these athletes need to perform at their best.
So how does this translate into you earning more?
Let’s take the example of two people doing the same job.
One just turns up and goes through the motions. Tries to avoid any problems and just does the minimum they need to do each and every day.
The other turns up every day, ready and willing to resolve problems, putting their best efforts forward all the time. When needed, they go above and beyond what is normal. Just like the Olympic hopeful, they are striving to deliver their best every day.
Now let’s roll forward to pay review time. Or Bonus time. Or when a potential promotion comes up.
What does the boss do?
Will they give the two employees the same pay rise?
The same bonus?
Which employee is more likely to be considered for promotion?
What if the business needs to downsize?
In my experience, the person who put in their best effort every day has the much greater chance of being rewarded financially.
So that is how an Olympic athlete can help you to earn more money.
Use their example of giving your best every time, and this change in mindset will give you have a far greater chance of being rewarded financially.
