Open Letter to the Regional Ministerial Taskforce
The Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced on 14 March 2017 the creation of a Regional Ministerial Taskforce, of which he is the chair.
Using the words of Deputy Chair, Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories and Regional Communications Fiona Nash, this taskforce was set up to “build the kinds of rural, regional and remote communities that our children and our grandchildren either want to stay in, or come back to.”
I am firm believer that for far too long we have a Sydney and Melbourne focus in Australia, by big business and successive state and federal governments. All of which is to the detriment of regional and rural Australia.
And now this is spreading into Sydney and Melbourne driving demand for housing and driving house prices ever upwards.
I applaud the formation of the Regional Ministerial Taskforce, and I have set out below the submission I have already made to this Taskforce.
I remain open and willing to help all Australians get a better deal.
If you have ideas and suggestions to help regional and rural Australia, why not make your own submission to the Regional Ministerial Taskforce.
Copy of Submission to the Regional Ministerial Taskforce
Dear Prime Minister Turnbull, Minister Nash, Minister Birmingham, Minister Cash, Minister Chester, Minister Hunt, Minister Joyce and Minister Sinodinos
I was very pleased to see the formation of the Regional Ministerial Taskforce today and your participation in this.
I know that the Taskforce has just been set up and agenda and areas to be reviewed are still being assessed.
But I would like to suggest that there is one significant issue facing Australia that this taskforce can start to help address and benefit all Australians, not just those in regional and rural Australians.
This issue is changing the Sydney and Melbourne focus by big business and successive state and federal governments.
We have nearly 40% of Australia’s population living in Sydney and Melbourne. Compare that with the United States of America, where its two largest cities, New York and Los Angeles have around 11 per cent of the total population of the United States.
Why are these people there?
They are there because that is where the jobs are at.
Now this Sydney and Melbourne focus has two real and very significant impacts on Australia.
Firstly, it is driving people away from regional and rural towns and into Sydney and Melbourne. This is affecting the quality of life in the bush for people and will, if continued unchecked, result in many services in regional and rural towns shutting down. This will in turn drive more and more people to places like Sydney and Melbourne.
The second issue is housing affordability. My research has shown that the reason we have housing affordability issues in Sydney and Melbourne is that as more and more people live in Sydney and Melbourne (because that is where the jobs are), the more demand is being placed on housing stock, which pushes the prices of houses up.
So if we can create a movement where business and government create real jobs in regional and rural Australia, not only will regional and rural Australia benefit greatly from this, so will capital city residents benefit as lower demand on housing will help start to solve the housing affordability issue.
I think you have the great opportunity to develop one encompassing policy that will address the concerns of a large number of Australians, both in the capital cities and on the regional and rural areas.
I wish you all the best in your endeavours.
Should you wish to see my research, or discuss this matter with me further, I am happy to assist anyway I can.
