I want to start by asking a question.
When you go to work what are you getting paid for?
I think most people will say that they are getting paid to do a task, or paid for their time.
Well, I think this may have been right a while ago, but times are no longer like that.
Today, you no longer get paid to turn up to work. You only have a job if you solve a problem.
Think about a plumber, they get paid to solve the problem of a leaking tap.
What about a doctor. They get paid to solve your health problems.
What about a receptionist? They get paid to solve the problem of properly greeting customers and screening phone calls.
Some people will answer, they are getting paid for their experience. Well, I question that too!
Let’s take two plumbers. One has been a plumber for 20 years and one just for a year. You want a tap replaced. Does the person who has been a plumber for 20 years have 20 years’ more experience in replacing a tap than the other plumber?
I doubt it. I would say both plumbers have the same experience, just one has repeated it for over 20 years!
So the first step grow and keep your income is to understand you are paid to solve problems.
So what problems are you solving when you go to work?
Who would you happily pay more money to, your local GP to remove a wart on your finger, or the specialist to remove a tumour on your brain?
Most people would answer the specialist.
So why does the specialist get paid more money?
You could argue that they have had more training. But the real reason is that they are solving a bigger problem. And because this is a bigger problem, you are willing to pay more money to get it solved.
So the second step to grow and keep your income is to understand you are paid more to solve bigger problems.
So if you want to get paid more what bigger problems can you solve?
Once you understand that you are paid according to the problems you solve, this leads to the next step which is why you may no longer get paid.
Let’s take airport border protection officials. You know the ones you need to wave your passport in front of as you enter the international airport. When I first travelled internationally (a long time ago), I had to present my passport to a person who looked at it, looked at me, asked some questions, they stamped my passport and off I went.
Well today it has all changed. My passport now has a microchip and last time I went through customs I did not talk to a person. Instead, a camera scanned my face, matched it with photo on the passport and the microchip record, opened the barrier and I was through.
Same problem, but solved faster, cheaper and possibly more accurate than the old human ways. So even though the same problem exists, there would be a lot of border protection officers out of a job.
So the third step to grow and keep your income is to understand you only get paid if you can solve the problem better and more effective that someone, or something else.
So, is there anyone or anything coming down the pipeline which could solve problems you are currently paid to solve better than you?
So What Next?
Hopefully by now you understand that you get paid to solve problems as long as you can solve these better than anyone or anything else. And the bigger the problems you solve the more you get paid.
So, next time you want a pay rise, stop thinking about what your boss can do for you. Start thinking about how you can help your boss solve bigger problems, better than someone or something else, so your boss will be happy to pay you more.
This change in mindset will help you to grow and keep your income.
