Today I want to talk about how thinking like a professional footballer can help you to get paid more.

Now you are probably wondering, how can thinking like a professional footballer help you to get paid more?

Let me explain.

Let’s start with how a professional footballer gets paid.

Does a top grade player get paid more than a lower grade player?  Of course they do!

So to get paid more, a professional footballer needs to be in the top grade.

Now let’s look at how a professional footballer gets to the top grade.

Why would a coach or manager pick a lower grade player to play the top grade if they did not believe they play at the top grade level?

So a lower grade football player only gets picked to play the top grade if they are playing like a top grade player, even when they are playing in the lower grade.

To get paid more, a professional footballer needs to play like a top grade player, even when they are not in the top grade.

How does this translate into you being able to get paid more?

Let’s take the example of two people doing the same job.

One just turns up and goes through the motions.  Tries to avoid any problems and just does the minimum they need to do each and every day.

The other turns up every day, ready and willing to resolve problems, putting their best efforts forward all the time.  When needed, they go above and beyond what is normal.

Just like the top grade professional footballer, they are striving to deliver their best every day.  Even if they are in a second grade job, they are striving to deliver a top grade performance every day.

Now let’s roll forward to pay review time.  Or Bonus time.  Or when a potential promotion comes up.

What does the boss do?

Will they give the two employees the same pay rise?

The same bonus?

Which employee is more likely to be considered for promotion?

What if the business needs to downsize?

In my experience, the person who acts like a first grade footballer even when in second grade, has the much greater chance of being rewarded financially and get paid more.

By changing your mindset and giving your best every time, this will give you have a far greater chance of being rewarded financially.

So that is how thinking and acting like a top grade professional footballer can help you get paid more.
